# Class Activity - One Question, and the First Arrow

## Description
This form ends brainstorming. It asks for one question, your choice about the two projects, and the first step of the modeling cycle. The map it follows is the course page *The Modeling Cycle (Part 1)*. Read Part 1 of that page before answering Section 1.
Two ways to respond. Type your answers into the questions below, or print the two-sided form, fill it out by hand, and upload a scan or photo in the last question. Either is fine. If you upload the form, write "see attached" in the typed questions.
## Quiz prompts
**Paper form upload (only if you used it).** Upload your completed form as a PDF or image.
**0. Your one question.** Write the question you are taking forward, as a modeling problem, in one sentence. It may be one of your three, a revision of one, or new. Then say which. Same as my Revisited pick, revised from it, or new since my earlier forms.
**1. The two projects, your choice.** Independent is the choice for breadth. Joined is the choice for depth, and makes sense when the project will require digging out where its mathematics came from. Neither is better, and you may change your mind after the first lap. Answer with one of the following. Independent, this question is my modeling project and my model review will be of something else (name it). Joined, this question is both and my model review will be of the model this project rests on. Not sure yet, and here is what would help me decide.
**2. The ladder, run backward.** Strip the interpretation from your question, then the meaning, then the labels. Give three lines. The application problem, the word problem, and the mathematics underneath. Writing "not yet" on the last line is an honest answer and tells us where the work is.
**3. What "solved" looks like.** One or two sentences. What would you have to be able to show, compute, or predict to call this question answered for this semester?
**4. First assumptions, the embarrassing ones.** "All models are wrong, but some are useful." What you will ignore, what you will hold constant, what you will treat as known. Three to five. Crude is correct at this stage. The goal is a pipeline that reaches analysis, because the analysis is the teacher.
**5. Quantities that will get a symbol, and expressions that will get an equation.** Names and a guess at the symbol or the form. Sections 4 and 5 will be asked for in more detail on October 2.
**6. What you need, and the first computation.** What you need from me, from the literature, and from data, a line for each. Then, if you had to bend the corner by October 16, what is the first computation you would run?
